Kali was constructed by Simon and Jon in Simons composites workshop
at
Brancaster Staithe over a two year period; everything was made in
house
apart from the engine propeller and electronics.
3 outer skins and 2 inner skins of SE 84LV intermediate modulus carbon
pre-preg, sandwich a 14mm Nomex core constructed on a 9m x 1.2m tooling
table designed and built in-house, after vacuuming and curing producing
flat panels and when twisted, shaped panels. The hull was then assembled
from a kit of parts.
Kali has been built around the crew and designed with the Round Britain
record attempt in mind; for example, 4 fuel filling points to ensure
rapid
fuelling and clean tapered tubes with no rubbing strake,
Kali is single
minded lean and mean, if we dont require it for the attempt
we dont
carry it.
The crew sit in tandem in simple ultra lightweight quick release
suspension seating also designed by Simon providing progressive suspension
in 3 directions. The cockpit is built with the same Intermediate modulus
carbon fibre that the hull is constructed from with a Polycarbonate
wind
shield, whilst Ballistic Aramid protects the crew from any catastrophic
engine malfunction.
